International Airports in Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s two principal international gateways serve distinct regions. Juan Santamaría International Airport is the primary point of entry for the Central Valley and much of the central and southern Pacific. Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO)

Location: Alajuela, immediately west of San José.

Juan Santamaría International Airport is Costa Rica’s largest aviation gateway. Its location is particularly convenient for buyers and residents based in the Central Valley, as well as travelers continuing toward the Caribbean, the Central Pacific, or the southern regions of the country.

Its position near Liberia can materially reduce transfer times for property owners in Papagayo, Playa Hermosa, Coco, Flamingo, Conchal, Tamarindo, and other parts of Guanacaste.

Regional and Domestic Airports

Costa Rica’s domestic aviation network is an important advantage for residents who divide their time between the Central Valley, coastal homes, business interests, and more secluded destinations.

National services are generally operated with small fixed-wing aircraft known locally as avionetas. In English, these are usually described as light aircraft, commuter aircraft, or small turboprop planes. Depending on the operator and route, they commonly accommodate approximately 9 to 19 passengers.

The experience differs from traveling on a large commercial aircraft. Cabins are more compact, baggage allowances may be lower, and passengers may have a clear view of the cockpit and surrounding landscape. Many journeys take between 20 minutes and one hour. This can make domestic air service particularly valuable when the equivalent drive involves mountain roads, ferry crossings, seasonal conditions, or four to seven hours of travel.

Tobías Bolaños International Airport (SYQ)

Location: Pavas, San José.

Although it holds international status, Tobías Bolaños primarily serves domestic routes, charter services, private aviation, business aircraft, and flight training. It is an important aviation center for travelers already based in the San José metropolitan area.

Flying Versus Driving in Costa Rica

Choosing between a domestic flight and a private vehicle often depends on the location, length of stay, luggage requirements, and the purpose of the journey.

For residents based in the Central Valley or traveling through nearby regions, a rental car or private driver may offer greater flexibility. Road travel also makes it easier to visit several communities during a property search.

For more distant destinations such as the Osa Peninsula, Tortuguero, and parts of the Nicoya Peninsula, a domestic flight can transform a journey of several hours into a flight of less than one hour. This is especially relevant for owners who travel frequently, manage more than one property, or want to preserve as much time as possible at their destination.

Domestic aircraft generally have stricter luggage limits than international flights. Travelers carrying surfboards, extensive equipment, or several large suitcases should confirm baggage policies before booking.
