The tendency is definitely moving towards more recreational areas within the community.  These spaces serve to promote more interaction in open areas, strengthening social interaction and as a motor for collective activities.

Video Interview: Wellness in the East Side of San José

In the video “Wellness in the East side of San José”, Tere Silva from LX Costa Rica speaks about how the current challenge for communities in terms of urban development is to incorporate green areas and recreational spaces as a way of life, promoting human interaction, artistic exchange, and recreational activities. These areas not only help maintain biodiversity and ecosystems but also contribute to the physical and mental well-being of individuals.

Examples of communities that have made efforts to preserve the natural topography and ecosystems are Hacienda Gregal and Senderos Aleste, which provide hiking trails and a bike park. One aspect that can be enjoyed in these projects is the opportunity for pet-friendly activities, with many trails accommodating them.

The pandemic has increased awareness of physical and mental health, leading to the development of more green and recreational spaces in the eastern part of the city. Condominiums are incorporating specific gym areas and promoting physical health, emphasizing accessibility for nearby residents.

Looking towards the future, there are projects that aim to promote coexistence between nature and urban areas. These projects use natural characteristics of the terrain, preserving and maintaining ecosystems while making them accessible to humans.

The development of the eastern project and similar initiatives are community-driven efforts to provide accessible green spaces and oases for the general population, particularly in close proximity to large residential areas.

Wellness Today

Wellness has taken a more important role in people’s lives since the pandemic occurred, making them reflect on its importance in their day-to-day life. The COVID-19 outbreak has led individuals to prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional well-being more than ever before. In the east side of San Jose, this shift is particularly noticeable as people have sought ways to maintain their health and find balance in their lives amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic.

This community has seen an increased focus on preventive measures such as regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and engaging in mindfulness activities to alleviate stress and promote overall wellness. Tere is no exception to this- when she’s not working in real estate, she enjoys her job as a pilates instructor in the community of Monterán and enjoys her time with her husband and family doing different sports.

Wellness and Nature

In today’s world, the incorporation of nature in everyday life plays a crucial role in promoting wellness. During the COVID-19 pandemic, as people grappled with lockdowns, social isolation, and increased screen time, nature’s healing and restorative power emerged as a remedy for the stresses and anxieties of daily life.

Nature incorporation has been shown to have numerous mental, emotional, and physical health benefits. It provides an escape from the confines of indoor spaces, reduces stress levels, enhances mood, improves cognitive function, and promotes overall well-being.

The current challenge that residential communities face is to incorporate green and recreational areas again as a way of life, as something that can be used to promote human and artistic exchange. In addition to maintaining the biodiversity of our surrounding ecosystems, this is helpful for our physical and mental well-being.

Connecting with nature offers a respite from the challenges of the pandemic, allowing individuals to find solace, rejuvenation, and a sense of connection with the world around them. Whether through walks in local parks, tending to indoor plants, or engaging in outdoor recreational activities, nature provides a much-needed balance to the digital and indoor-centric lifestyle that has become increasingly prevalent.

By prioritizing and integrating nature into everyday life, individuals can support their mental and emotional well-being, foster a greater sense of mindfulness, and cultivate a healthier relationship with themselves and the natural world.

Wellness options in the East side of San José

Designated areas within Residential Communities

Tere mentions how certain residential communities in the east side of San José, such as El Gregal, have been planned with accessible recreation spaces for their residents. El Gregal has maintained many of its original natural areas to create interconnected paths through its beautiful primary forest and rivers, perfect for connecting with nature.

Other Wellness Areas in the East Side

One thing that Tere loves about the East side of San José is how there are many oasis around the area that serve as lungs for communities. These are green areas that provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city in an accessible and safe way. One of the spaces she enjoys the most is Senderos Aleste, an outdoor park with trails that make it possible to practice cycling or hiking alone or with pets. Parque del Este, another large park in San Rafael, is another great option to walk and relax.
